This is my first sock and I decided to start off using dpns to get a feel for it, becasue I thought the 2 circ needle method and the toe up method may be hard for a first timer. Tonight I turned the heal and am now knitting the foot part. I think I picked up an extra stitch somewhere, but I decided to continue knitting just to see how it would come out and get a general undersanding of the construction/termonolgy used. I really like it so far (however I picked a 100% mercinized cotton and it is a little rough working with, but I am getting the hang of it.
